Teachers Like Me (TLM)
Kansas City, MO

Teachers Like Me (TLM), founded in 2020, is a nonprofit organization in Kansas City dedicated to increasing the number of Black educators in public schools. TLM supports this mission by providing training, wellness resources, and subsidized housing to Black teachers. Focused on historically segregated neighborhoods east of Troost Avenue, TLM partnered with LJC to design sustainable and cost-effective housing that promotes community engagement. Artin served as the structural engineer for this project, ensuring that the designs are both efficient and replicable. Located between the 4100 and 4200 blocks of Tracy and Virginia Avenue, the development features stacked 2,700 SF duplexes with modular wood structures. The design fosters communal interaction while maintaining a seamless connection to the surrounding neighborhood, aligning with TLM’s mission to create a lasting impact on the local community.
This project not only provides housing solutions but also contributes to the broader goal of increasing Black teachers in Kansas City’s public schools, helping to close the representation gap in education.
